Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly more popular. However, many are unsatisfied with their results. Debra Dunn decided to have cosmetic surgery to fix a bump she had on her nose as a result of a childhood injury. After having two nose jobs and spending thousands of dollars, she was so dissatisfied with her results that she was embarrassed when she left the house and avoided mirrors. When she ventured out in public, she hid behind her hair. Although doctors tried convincing her that her nose was lovely and others would kill for a nose like hers, she greatly regretted ruining the face she was born with. Dunn even felt as though she no longer resembled herself. However, the process is long, the risks are very much present, and patients may have long recovery times. Risks of Cosmetic Surgery Although improving appearance through cosmetic surgery seems optimistic, risks and possible complications are associated with cosmetic surgery. Patients’ susceptibleness to these complications vary but are certainly issues that should be taken into consideration. Many patients don’t take into consideration the risks of cosmetic surgery. Following a cosmetic procedure, patients may develop infection, disease or illnesses. Along with cosmetic surgery, complications such as: â€Å"paralysis of the face or other body parts, abnormal heart rhythm, airway obstruction, blood clots, brain damage, heart attack, malignant hyperthermia, nerve damage and stroke† are possible (Disadvantages). After surgery, patients may have to undergo a lengthy healing process. Healing takes days, months, or even forever depending on the patient (Disadvantages). America’s lack of colonization and European ideals of private property resulted in the rapid immigration of Europeans seeking wealth and the possibility of a high social standard.
